“I get by with a little help from my friends.” - Eleanor Roosevelt
Just kidding, the Beatles sang that, and while I am sure they were talking about LSD or some other psychedelic drug, I am on the same wavelength lately when I’m think about my insulin. I haven’t fully dug into my diabetic journey on this blog – I’ll save that for an upcoming post – but I have recently started basal-bolus insulin therapy in the new year.
This essentially means that I take a nice little shot before I have a meal that is going to spike my blood sugar and it helps to keep my glucose levels in range more. From learning how to adapt to carrying insulin and its accoutrements everywhere or figuring out my carb to insulin ratios and correction ratios, this has definitely been a learning process…one involving math btw, so I better be in your thoughts and prayers!
However, with this extra pain in the ass also comes a lot of freedom – freedom from the stress or guilt of eating a piece of pizza or a bagel and knowing I am going to run high and not feel great for hours, waiting for my glucose to return to a normal range. I get to eat (slightly) more of what I want, when I want. So in that spirit, I thought we could play a fun little game of insulin gymnastics where I share some things I have eaten recently thanks in part to my handy dandy little needle and how much I juiced myself up to enjoy it! In this game of gymnastics, I am a ‘roided out Russian and I am going for the gold!
About a third of this slice of Artichoke pizza: A #tbt to when I was 18 – it is still just as phat, still just as sloppy, and still just as amazing, especially after a few drinks! My friend bought this and I just mooched which somehow was the perfect amount!
Total Insulin Units: 4.5!
This tiramisu and burnt basque cheesecake from Evelina Rosticceria: A new restaurant around the corner from me from the beloved neighborhood favorite Evelina. Though Ft. Greene has no less than 1756273643 overpriced Italian restaurants, this one is special because it does PIZZA and not PASTA and it’s, dare I say in this economy, reasonably priced??? The food was honestly very good and I can see this becoming a very convenient and cute staple!
Total Insulin Units: 7!
This cosmo from Cervo’s: It was valentine’s day, I HAD to get a cosmo! <3 The only way this cosmo could be better is if it was made by Ina Garten herself. If you are at Cervo’s and it’s not on the menu, order it anyways.
Total Insulin Units: 3.5!
These potatoes and tilefish from Sailor: Potatoes so nice they fry them twice! Not pictured were the other bread centered dishes I ate which were all incredible, but I have already ranted about Sailor on here (and I am not gonna stop anytime soon)!
Total Insulin Units: 8!
