hi! it’s been a while! i hope summer has been treating everyone okay. i feel like i dropped off here for a bit, but between the concurrent heat waves in nyc and the way work has been, my brain feels like a scrambled egg. these past few weeks has us spread eagle in front of the AC and i'll probably need to set up a klarna plan with con ed…(do you think they take apple pay?)
i want to get back into writing a bit more, but frankly i have been feeling overworked and lazy and i want to be more intentional about what i’m putting out on here. i’m also doing my best to take advantage of the precious summer time. before you know it, i will be complaining about the cold and saying i would do anything just to sweat again (feel free to slap me then)! i’ve been trying to spend as much time in the sun (without puking) as possible. one thing i love about summer in the city is the way it empties out – sometimes it’s you going on a perfect weekend trip upstate (perhaps a post to come) and sometimes it’s you getting a prime seat at a restaurant you’ve been wanting to try because everyone else is “out east”. there’s nothing better than feeling a slight eeriness that perhaps the streets of NYC belong to you, just for a few days.
however, in order to maximize my time and yours – i’m keeping this post short. just five spectacular things i’ve had so far this summer. they’re all simple and mind blowing and i hope you get some time to try these places (and dishes) out.
this butter and parm pasta from roscioli - i really didn’t want to believe the hype about roscioli…i feel like all the most annoyingly italian people i know went ON about it. we get it, YOU’RE italian, THEY’RE italian! however, july 4th weekend felt especially empty in the city and with no real plans, my boyfriend and i decided to treat ourselves to dinner at a restaurant we would normally have a harder time getting a table at. so roscioli it was! we had a spectacular skin contact leaning white wine (that I am now stalking the Eataly wine shop for), free bread basket (you know i love) and an incredible fennel salad.
but the star of the show was this pasta. i tend to gravitate to the type of dish that is extremely simple, but made with high quality ingredients that allow it to stand out. misi has a similar dish with fettucine, but that stood no chance against this pasta with 2 year aged parm and normandy butter. so silky, so smooth, so delicious, it was one of the best pastas i have had in recent years! blake got the amatriciana which was also superb from the taste i had as i avoided the guanciale.the potato salad at eel bar - eel bar is the new restaurant from my all time favorite restaurant team behind cervo’s, the fly, hart’s and minnow. i have and will continue to talk about them non-stop on here, so if you don’t like it, stop being a hater and grow up. i had high hopes for this new spot, and i went opening night expecting there to be some kinks to work out.
i’m happy to say everything was just about flawless! slightly cheaper than cervo’s and focusing more on spanish food, everything we had was great, but the absolute knockout, the queen bee herself was this potato salad with roe on it. i can’t have potato salad any other way now…it’s so decadent…so fabulous…and secretly a little spicy?a whitefish bagel from circles - circles is a fairly newish bagel spot in hudson, ny located right off the main drag of warren street. they specialize in sourdough bagels much like my current favorite apollo bagels. my best friend had the owner cater his birthday a few years ago, where he made heavenly sourdough crust pizzas, so i was very excited to try this spot.
the place looks like it was decorated by collina strada x coming soon and the menu, like apollo is super compact and simple and everything is delicious. i got a whitefish bagel that sadly was so good i didn’t get a picture of it. truly your loss, but i promise i will try to get better about this. the whitefish salad was just a tiny bit spicy and topped with pickled veggies and peppers. 10/10, no notes from me!a veggie dog, vegan caesar, and “mac and cheese” pasta salad at sauced’s memorial day bbq - we found ourselves biking around on memorial day weekend when i told blake all i wanted was a veggie dog at someone’s backyard bbq. less than five minutes later i saw sauced was hosting a memorial day party with the most insane veggie dogs and this mac and cheese pasta salad that blew my mind. the wine here is also great and i am loving the rotating food pop ups sauced is doing both at this location and their new east village spot.
the love lost at gair - in dumbo, gair is a beautifully designed bar on the most chaotic corner in brooklyn at water and washington. if you find yourself there and need to escape the 19732594729812 people taking the same photo of the brooklyn bridge, i suggest dipping in here and ordering the love lost – a kindred spirit to one of my favorite blood sugar friendly cocktails, the oaxacan old fashioned. their food also looks delicious, and i’ll definitely be coming back here whenever i find myself in the neighborhood.
okay, that’s it – just five really delicious things! stay cool and screw con ed <3
until next time! big kiss mwah!
